Success in Hifz is 10% memory and 90% discipline. One of the greatest "secrets" of the masters is the Sabaqi system—revising the last five lessons before starting a new one. This moves the verses from fragile short-term memory to the "hard drive" of the long-term memory.

Another secret is Tark-al-Ma'asi (Abandoning Sins). Imam al-Shafi'i famously complained to his teacher about his memory, and the advice was: "Knowledge is a light, and the light of Allah is not given to a sinner."
