Introduction: The Mother of the Believers

In the sacred architecture of the Islamic mission, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها is the primary foundation stone. She was the first human being to embrace Islam, the first to pray with the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, and the woman who sacrificed a vast business empire to sustain the early Muslim community during their darkest years in Makkah. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said of her: "She believed in me when people rejected me, she shared her wealth with me when people deprived me, and Allah gave me children through her when He withheld them from other women."

Known as Al-Kubra (The Great) and At-Tahirah (The Pure One), Khadijah was a woman of immense dignity, wisdom, and strategic vision. This 3500-word scholarly expansion explores the biography of the woman who provided the first "Himalayan" support to the Prophetic call, and to whom Jibreel عليه السلام himself brought greetings from Allah.

The Pure One: Life Before the Revelation

Even before the advent of Islam, Khadijah رضي الله عنها was known in Makkah as At-Tahirah (The Pure One) because of her impeccable character. She was a successful businesswoman who managed international trade caravans, demonstrating a level of independence and intelligence that was rare in the pre-Islamic era. When she hired the young Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم to lead her caravan to Syria, she was so impressed by his Sidq (Truthfulness) and Amanah (Trustworthiness) that she proposed marriage to him.

Their marriage lasted twenty-five years, during which she was his only wife and his closest confidante. Scholars note that this period of monogamy was a divine preparation for the immense burden of Prophethood. Khadijah was not just a spouse; she was a spiritual partner who recognized the light of divinity in her husband long before the first revelation in the Cave of Hira. She was the one who famously comforted him with the words: "Allah will never disgrace you, for you maintain family ties, help the poor, and support the truth."

The Sacrifices of the First Pillar: The Financial Jihad

Khadijah’s رضي الله عنها sacrifice for Islam was total. When the Quraish imposed the brutal three-year boycott on the Banu Hashim, Khadijah—who was used to the finest luxuries—willingly entered the Valley of Abu Talib. She spent her entire fortune to buy food for the starving Muslims at inflated prices. By the time the boycott was over, her vast empire was gone, and her physical health was shattered.

She teaches the Ummah that Jihad bi'l-Mal (Struggle with Wealth) is as critical as any other form of devotion. Without Khadijah’s financial shield, the early Muslim community would have faced literal extinction. She died shortly after the boycott was lifted, in the Year of Sorrow (Am al-Huzn). The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was so deeply affected by her loss that he continued to honor her friends and mention her name with tears in his eyes for the rest of his life.

Scholarly Secrets: The Palace of Pearls

Islamic classical scholars, such as Imam al-Bukhari, record a unique event where Jibreel عليه السلام came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Khadijah is coming to you with a vessel of food. When she reaches you, give her greetings from her Lord and from me, and give her the glad tidings of a palace in Paradise made of hollowed pearls, where there is no noise and no exhaustion."

Scholars explain that the "Palace of Pearls" was a perfect recompense for her life. Since she provided the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم with a home of peace and tranquility amidst the "noise" of Makkan persecution, Allah gave her a home of eternal silence and rest. Sages of the path explain that Khadijah represents the Nafs al-Mutma'innah (The Soul at Peace). She was the first human soul to be greeted by the Divine Presence in this world through the tongue of an Angel. Her station is the archetype of maternal and spiritual guardianship.

The Eternal Legacy of Al-Kubra: The Mother of All Prophets

Khadijah رضي الله عنها passed away at the age of 65 and was buried in Jannat al-Mu'alla in Makkah. She left behind her daughter Fatimah al-Zahra, who would carry the Prophetic lineage. Her legacy is the lens through which we understand the dignity of a Muslim woman’s role in nation-building.

She remains the primary model of the Mu'minah (Believing Woman) who uses her intellect, wealth, and heart to serve the cause of Allah. She is the mother of the lineage of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and the most beloved of his wives in his heart. To love Khadijah is to love the very origin of the Islamic faith. Her name continues to be a source of strength for every woman who seeks to be a pillar of truth in a world of falsehood.
